Places To Visit In Mount Abu
1. Dilwara Temple Complex
Located about 2 km away from the heart of the city, this complex of temples are dedicated to the 24 Tirthankaras of the Jain religion. However, tourists flock here from all parts of the world to witness the spectacular architecture created by the artful crafting of marble. There are a total of 5 temples in all.
2. Achalgarh
This is a beautiful and serene village located on the outskirts of the city. Visitors are keen to travel through the village for seeing the ruins and visit the Achalgarh Fort along with the temple bearing the same name. Both the fortress and the temple can be reached by climbing the steep hill for about 10 minutes.
3. Nakki Lake
The lake locally known as the Nakki Jheel is a manmade lake, the first of its kind in India. It is 11000 meters deep and spans a 0.25 miles in all. The entire city can be witnessed from the lake which is a location for outings and enjoyment in the city.
4. Guru Shikhar
This is the highest point of Mount Abu, standing at a height of 1722 meters above sea level. It is also the topmost point of the Aravalli Range. The peak is noted for its magnificent view as well as the temples particularly the Dattatreya shrine that happens to be cave temple.
5. Shri Raghunathji Temple
This is a temple dedicated to Raghunath Ji, one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu. The Vaishnava sect of Hindus arrive at this temple in hordes and seek the blessing of the Lord for obtaining salvation and freedom from the cycles of life. The temple is located on the banks of the Nakki Lake and enjoys a sizable number of tourists every day.
6. Trevor’s Tank
It is a man-made area also known as the crocodile park. The reservoir has been constructed by a British engineer named Trevor who tried breeding crocodiles in this place. The area has been turned into nature lovers’ spot at present and serves as a popular picnic site at present. There are crowds of tourists seen throughout the year, enjoying the beauty of the park.
7. Arbuda Devi Temple
This temple has given the city its name. Known as Arbuda in the ancient times, the term had been shortened to Abu. Also known as Adhar Devi Temple, it is one of the most famous sites of pilgrimage at Mount Abu. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga also known as Katyayani.
8. Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary
The dense forest located right in the Aravalli Mountain Range had been declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1960. It covers a vast area of about 288 sq kilometres and is host to innumerable species of wildlife including leopard, bears and pangolin. There are many popular birds’ species in the forest too with the grey jungle fowl being the most famous of the lot.
9. Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University
Established in 1661, by the then Governor of Aurangzeb; Nabir Khan, the Jama Masjid, consists of four minarets and a montage of plastering along the exquisite paintings and carvings leaving the visitors entirely spellbound.
10. Gaumukh Temple
This is a picturesque spot and religious place of worship for people belonging to the Hindu faith. However, it is necessary to climb 700 steps in order to reach the temple. It is a Shiva temple predominantly with Nandi, the divine bull and entourage of Lord Shiva being the principle idol occupying the shrine.
11. Sunset Point
Witnessing the sun going down at the close of the day is one of the high points of a visit to Mount Abu. While tourists are free to observe this natural event from any part of the city, the sunset point is deemed to be the best location to visit in the evening and catch the play of colors on the sky as the sun goes down, finally vanishing below the hills.
