The Ahar Cenotaphs
The most beautiful burial ground there could be in the entire world, the house of resurrected yet intricately built domes, is located just 3 km away from the old city of Udaipur, the cremation capital of the Mewar dynasty called the Ahar Cenotaphs. The place has a total of 372 cenotaphs of various Maharanas and queens of Mewar forming a fantastic yet spectacular view built over for a total of 400 years. A total of 19 maharanas have been cremated here ruling in different periods of the time.
The most magnificent and striking cenotaph is that of Maharana Sangram Singh who ruled from 1710 till 1734 representing the Mewar kingdom. The most recent erected cenotaph is that of the Maharana Bhagwat Singh in the year 2004 who was the last Maharana of the city.
What adds on to the prominence of this burial place is the Ahar government Museum containing a rare collection of various monuments dating back to 10th century. The place draws a lot of tourists to the place, people who love relishing in the historical artefacts and stories. It contains copper and pottery commodities which are more than 3300 years old along with sculptures of Hindu gods and Jain teachers dating back to the 8th and 16th century AD.
