Pattu(Silk) Malai(hill) though interpreted as hill draped in silk to describe the rich terrain, the name is indicative of the fact that silkworms were once grown here during the Colonial Era. However, there’s no denying that the well-maintained glossy tea estates covering the hill areas resplendent as silk. Tea plantations of Harrisons Malayalam and AV Thomas & Co. who are key players in the tea sector are located here.
Pattumala church is a famous centre of worship. The fine structure of the Church, built entirely using granite is perched atop the hill, from where visitors get to enjoy a perfect view of the surrounding landscape full of tea gardens, hillocks and small streams as well as relish the fresh and cool mountain air.
You can participate in the prayer service, visit the nearby Flower Garden showcasing colourful anthurium, orchids and roses, cycle or stroll through the hillside, and also shop for candles at the Church or tea from the estates here before heading on.
