Rumtek Monastery

The monastery happens to be the largest Gompa across Sikkim and presents the tourists with a visual delight along with the knowledge of religious and cultural heritage of Buddhism that spread to the world from India. It was built in accordance to the wishes of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje and resembles Kagyu, the headquarters of the Kargyupa sect in Tibet. It is of particular interest to the art lovers as well as the philosophers with almost all being excited at observing the playing of Kora instrument by the residing monks as well as other pilgrims.
The main temple along with the ‘Karma Shri Nalanda Institute’ are the actual points of interest within the monastery but the beautiful golden structure of the monastery along with the spectacular Tibetan murals and decorations of silk banners & thankas make the visit worthwhile. The celebration of Gutor marking the end of a Tibetan Year draws huge crowds to Rumtek as well.
