Sankar Monastery ladakh

Sankar Monastery also known as Sankar Gompa, is a daughter-establishment of Spituk Monastery. Located at Khardung La, at elevation of 5,359 m (17,582 ft) pass, belongs to the Gelug- Pa Sect of Buddhism. Only 20 monks live in this Monastery and only few of them are permanent. So, the entry is restricted to the early morning and evening only. Evening is the better time to visit as the monastery is well lit, and shines in the evening with these lightings.

The walls of the monastery are decorated with beautiful paintings. The Tibetan culture is depicted beautifully, the figure of Avalokiteśvara, that stands tall with thousand heads and thousand arms holding weapons of destruction in each arm is worth watching. Unlike other Monastery, it’s not very famous, but the peace, solitude, culture and the beautiful nature has that power to attract you if you want some quiet time away from the main city. Also, due to its peaceful environment it’s a good place to meditate.
