Rohtang Pass

Rohtang pass is a is a high mountain pass, natures perfect spectacle on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km to the north of Manali, which is connected to two amazing valleys Manali and Lahaul & Spiti. It lies beyond the habitable world, at an altitude of 13000 feet.

Rohtang pass is very famous among the travelers, the scenic beauty of the nature has the power to captivate the travelers, the glaciers, snow-covered peaks all around make the journey awesome. The adventurers and biking enthusiasts travel every year in large numbers. Crossing the slippery roads, dangerous curves and extremely cold weather. And in return they get the memory for life. They receive an amazing welcome from the snowcapped mountains, beautiful nature and the fresh air as a reward.

The route beyond Rohtang is accessible only for 3 months between July-September, this is the time when the people coming from Lahaul valley transport crops and potatoes to the market in Kullu and then sustain on the earned money for the remaining part of the year. So, this road holds a great significance to them.

Travelling to this pass is not that easy, still it has thronged by countless tourists when it is accessible and is open to the public during the span of 6 months. Also, the government is stressing on to setup ropeway between Kothi village, in Manali and Rohtang Pass. Ropeway reduces the number of tourist vehicles which reduces a lot of traffic in the way to Rohtang Pass.

To travel beyond Rohtag pass a mandatory Rohtag Pass permitis required by all the visitors. You will also need to show the confirmation voucher of hotel booking at one of your destinations. This pass costs Rs. 500 + Rs.50 which is charged as a congestion fee per head which is imposed by the National Green Tribunal on all vehicles travelling to the pass.

There are two types of permit that can be booked online. One if for travelling to Rohtang pass and another is to travel beyond Rohtang pass. You can also book the tickets offline from which depends on first come first basis from the Tourist and Information centre on all days from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Rohtang pass is between May or June to October or November. During May, Rohtang becomes a tempting place for adventure enthusiasts. Tourists can go for various thrilling adventure sports such as snow scooter, skiing and mountain biking.
