Pangong Lake

Pangong Lake is also known as “High Grassland Lake”, one of the most famous lake and attraction for travelers travelling to Leh and Ladakh, situated at the height of 4350 m. One third of this lake is in India and remaining two-third is in China.

The spellbound beauty and the freezing cold water makes it amazing. The water of the lake changes its color with every fall of sun rays, it appears as blue, green and red at different times. The Himalayan range around the lake enhanced the site of this beautiful lake.

The beauty of this lake can’t be expressed in words, and the trip to Ladakh is not complete if you have not been to this lake. You can spend hours in admiring its beauty. The craziest adventour is to take a dip in its freezing cold water, and if you are a adventour seeker. It is one of the opportunity you can’t afford to miss and regret.

The lake is known for its saline water. There are no fishes as it does not support any aquatic life, but it is a home to many migrant birds during summer.

Location

Pangong lake is 160 Km from Leh. You can take the Manali-Leh highway till Karu than leave the highway and turn left towards Sakti and go to Durbuk via Chang La.

You can also go to the Pangog Lake from Nubra Valley. The advantage of taking this route is it will save your time as you don’t have to come back to Leh. There are two routes, one is from Wari La, high-altitude pass located at a height of almost 17,400ft and another route will take you along with the Shyok River.

Permits

There are many areas in Ladakh which are considered as inner line, that is near to the borders. So, travelling to these areas requires a permit and Pangong TSO is one of them. If you are Indain than you need to obtain the inner line permit. If you are a Foreign national you require the Protected area permit, issued by government and which allows their entry to the restricted area for certain period.

You can easily get the permit via http://lahdclehpermit.in/. You will have to pay Rs.400 as environmental fee and + Rs.20/ day as Inner line fee for every individual to get the permit.

Accommodation and Food

You will find several camps around the lake with all the amenities. If you are not a camping person than you can go for home stay in nearby villages. The locals are very friendly and you will get ample opportunity to know the culture and locals if you will go for home stay.

Food will be rather simple but tasty and nutritious. You will not get the chain of fast food at the height of 4350 m, but you will enjoy every bite of the simple food at such an altitude and atmosphere. It will be the best experience.

Best Time to Visit

There is no time to enjoy the beauty of this lake, it all depends on your preference. You can visit during summer between May to September and enjoy the camping as well as the scenic beauty of the lake.

You can also visit during winters, weather is extremely cold and the surroundings are covered by snow, but if you want to walk on frozen lake and enjoy the ice skating. The winter (between Nov to Feb) will be waiting for you.
