Mulbekh Monastery

Famous for its two Gompas, Drukpa and Gelugpa, situated on Leh-Srinagar highway 45 kms from Kargil and 260 km from Leh. It is famous for its 30ft long statue of Maitreya Buddha, carved on to the rocks.This huge limestone sculpture with beautiful face is a delight to eye. Also, its location at 3504 meters above the foothills gives a captivating view of the valleys down.

History

It’s an old sculpture, some believe it is from the Kushan period in the early 1st centuries and the modern scholars term it as being built during 8th century.

Mulbekh Monastery situated at 45km from Leh, one can easily reach by bus or jeep.
