Alchi Gompa or Alchi Monastery, is situated in Alchi village around 69 kms towards the Western side of the main city. Alchi Monastery is the centre of attraction of Alchi village. Unlike other villages, this is one of the lush green and most fertile village. Most of the houses in the village are built of bricks, there are beautiful apricort trees in both side of the main road. With its rich history and display of paintings, the backside of the monastery also welcomes you with scenic view of the Indus river not to be missed out. The authentic Ladakhi cuisine of Alchi kitchen in the vicinity is worth trying.
Blend with the Kashmiri architecture, the monastery complex was built according to local tradition, by Guru Rinchen Zangpo between 958 and 1055. Alchi is part of three villages which constitute the ‘Alchi group of monuments’, the other two villages are Mangyu and Sumda Chun, the monuments in these villages are known as “unique style and workmanship”, but Alchi monastic complex is the most famous and beautiful.
Alchi Choksor Monastery is around 70 Km from Leh, it takes around 3 hours to reach by road. The magnificent sceneries are captivating with grasslands, fields, hilly terrains, snow covered mountains and the beautiful flowing Zanskar and Indus Rivers
