The Hawa Mahal
Also known as the Palace of Winds or the Palace of Breeze, this exquisite masterpiece is based on Rajput architecture constructed out of red and pink sandstone. Because of this, Jaipur is referred to be as Pink City. The Hawa Mahal lies in the proximity to the City Palace and is known to be the Jharokha or the women’s chambers. It was constructed under the patronage of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799 after he was inspired by the unique structure of the Khetrei Mahal.
The Lal Chand Ustad chiefly designed this grandeur of the historic palace. The ethereal masterpiece is a five storey construction representing a form of the honeycomb structure or a beehive and has 953 small windows commonly called as ‘jharokhas’ decorated with elaborate and intricate latticework.
According to legends, the small windows were built for the royal ladies to watch through the activities of everyday life and festivals as they were bound by the purdah system and had to obey the rule of not being seen in public without coverings. Although the city receives scorching heat, the architecture of the Mahal is constructed in such a way that allows cool air from the Venturi effect to pass through the windows making the entire area in around very pleasant during summers.
The view of the Hawa Mahal with all its windows is considered to be the front but actually, it’s the rear or the back end of the Mahal, the entire place is much grand than that. What amazes the tourists is the stone carved screens, small casements and arched roofs of the Hawa Mahal.
